Strong and blocky layout with nicely defined border which makes for easy content reading. I did find it odd that the right sidebar is the same width as the content area, but it almost doesn’t function as a sidebar. The meta-info area is relegated to the bottom, as wide as both columns - a design trick that I’ve seen elsewhere but also isn’t the blogworld’s modus operandi. It works well either way.

Esao Andrews Exhibit In Seattle

Esao Andrews has new art for show at the Roq La Rue Gallery in Seattle. If you have a few thousand dollars’ worth of disposable income, I recommend you picking up a piece. It’s worth it.

Artist: Local H
Release: Twelve Angry Months
Label: Shout Factory
Designer: Kii Arens
Release Date: May 13, 2008

I did a quick image search of Twelve Angry Men, because I thought this album’s title was a play off of the film and perhaps the art would have followed suit. Turns out that it seems that neither is the case. The album is about breaking up with a girl. Ho-hum.

Bad Album Covers, Part Two

Bad Album Covers, Part Two

RandT posts an addendum (I assume) to the Worst Album Covers Ever. I generally give the older ones a bit of a handicap since tastes and talent change and develop dramatically over the decades - chintzy now was novel back then.

Using these parameters, the worst has to be Limp Bizkit’s, and I don’t say that only because Fred Durst’s concept for the title was utterly ridiculous and should not have been used as a basis for the artwork. Bad.

Artist: Death Cab For Cutie
Release: Narrow Stairs
Label: Atlantic
Designer: EE Storey
Release Date: May 13, 2008

Indie rock art darling EE Storey is in fine form here with some cluttered rainbow step rectangle things. If you step back a few feet from your monitor, you can see the Jolly Green Giant genuflecting and perhaps proposing to an upright, jilted Mephisto. The red villain resolutely turns his head and will have nothing to do with the womanizing leafy green enthusiast, I’ll say!

I knew right off the bat this was a children’s CD before knowing anything about it. Being the father of a two-year-old you develop these sort of instinct unconsciously. The artwork and accompanying book was done by keyboardist Kevin, and his drawings fits the style of children’s media nicely.

Artist: Wolf Parade
Release: At Mount Zoomer
Label: Sub Pop
Designer: Matt Moroz and Elizabeth Huey (artwork)
Release Date: June 17, 2008

As a general rule, I don’t think it’s a good idea for two artists to work on the same thing. It’s one cook too many in the kitchen, especially in print media. In web design there’s a little more leeway because there’s more easily defined roles (graphic production vs. coding, UI vs. databasing, etc.), but with a CD design it can take a turn for a messy worse.

I’m not sure what role Matt and Elizabeth played in doing this or how separated their tasks were, but something went awry. It’s like they began to write a sentence on each end and met at the middle, but they had different things in mind, thus rendering the combined statement meaningless. The left hand didn’t know what the right was doing. It’s like the weird kid in class that plays Mercy with himself during recess: it negates the reason for the “game” in the first place and ultimately looks ridiculous.

Saturday Staff Blog: Poo

So I managed to start things back up again here, if only a measly post a day. I’m going to ease myself back into the normal posting output, much like how a crotchety old man will ease into his favorite Barcalounger - you know the one: has the wooden recliner handle on the side with the worn finish, and duct tape on the arm rest.

So this SSB is merely a warning/promise, and don’t blame me for the title. I asked the wife for a word and that’s what she came up with. She is class.

Not really sure what’s going on here. There little context to the photo, and the typography and track listing make little sense. Maybe that’s the point? Or am I missing something?
